Black Flamingos Information
The Asbury Park, New Jersey-based, Freehold, New Jersey-born instrumental alternative surf rock trio Black Flamingos formed in the spring of 2014. Rob Butkowski, guitarist for Plato Zorba, Vincent Minervino, drummer for the Brigantines, and Declan O'Connell, bassist for Bog Iron Bloom, make up the band's rhythm section. Their sound has been compared to that of the Hellbenders, Messer Chups, and Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. Members of the band have said that the music of the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, the Ventures, and Dick Dale all influenced them.
The band played at the Asbury Park Surf Festival in 2014, and before the end of the year, they had shared the stage with the California rockabilly trio the Chop Tops, and the New Jersey punk rock outfit Agent Orange. Black Flamingos, a six-song EP, was released on CD and digital download on October 16, 2015. Coffee Haus Studios in Freehold, New Jersey, hosted the recording, with Benjamin Feldman handling engineering and mixing duties.
"Devil Punchbowl" was described as "firing a gritty blend of the Coffin Daggers and the Cramps up the middle," with "Butkowski growls and groans chord wizardry throughout each changing sector of sound" by the Aquarian Weekly. A "skilled band and refined voice in the genre of instrumental surf sounds" is praised as the review's final verdict. On October 30 (Mischief Night), Black Flamingos and the Coffin Daggers celebrated the release of their album at the Asbury Yacht Club.
