Billy Cobham Information
Billy Cobham (May 16, 1944) is a Panamanian-American jazz drummer. He was born in Colon, Panama. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he rose to fame as a trumpeter, Miles Davis' band member, and, later, the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Modern and Classic Drummer Halls of Fame have honored him with inductions: 1987 for Modern and 2013 for Classic.
With Michael Brecker, Barry Rogers, Randy Brecker, and John Abercrombie, Cobham formed the jazz-rock band Dreams. When he went on tour with Miles Davis and appeared on Davis's albums Bitches Brew and A Tribute to Jack Johnson, he took another step into jazz fusion. He and guitarist John McLaughlin formed the Mahavishnu Orchestra, another band that merged rock, funk, and jazz, in 1971 after leaving Davis.
Spectrum (1973), Cobham's first album, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard magazine's Jazz Albums chart and No. 26 on the Top 200 Albums chart, shocking both him and his record label. Cobham began to try new drum sets and instruments.
Cobham's impact was not limited to the jazz genre; he also impacted members of the progressive rock scene, including Bill Bruford of King Crimson and Danny Carey of Tool. Both Prince and Jeff Beck performed live renditions of Stratus by Cobham. Phil Collins credits The Inner Mounting Flame by the Mahavishnu Orchestra with his early sound.
