Isabelle Sophie Tweddle (May 27, 1999) is a British musician, singer, and songwriter. She was born in Ripon, England. Her stage identity is "Billie Marten," which the public knows her as. Billie Marten published her first single, "Ribbon," through Burberry's curation program in May 2014, a few months before her fifteenth birthday. The year prior, she collaborated with Fiona Bevan on a song. Marten says that "the elusiveness of the city, and how quickly you can lose something amongst the people and tube stations," is a major motif in "Ribbon."
Her first EP, Ribbon, came out in June 2014. At the 2014 Reading Festival in August, Marten performed on the BBC Introducing platform. In December 2014, she characterized her sound as "a mix between acoustic and quite folky and a little indie." Billie Marten joined the RCA Records subsidiary Chess Club Records in January 2015. In April 2015, she dropped a song titled "Heavy Weather," which debuted on BBC Radio 1 thanks to Huw Stephens.
In May, she issued a 7" vinyl of "Heavy Weather," with a cover of Royal Blood's "Out of the Black" as the flip side. Her 2015 debut single, "Bird," was published that September. The song, which she co-wrote with Olivia Broadfield, explores "how words can truly affect people, not always for the right reasons," as Marten puts it.
