Big Smith Information
Big Smith is a Springfield, Missouri-based band that features Jay Williamson, Mark and Jody Bilyeu, Bill and Rik Thomas, and Uncle Jeff. Molly Healey, a fiddler, is the newest addition, bringing the total to six talented people who are related via blood and harmony. They formed professionally in the fall of 1996 and gained a dedicated fan base performing wild acoustic music that embodied the Ozarks, using only acoustic guitars, mandolins, bass fiddles, and washboard.
Smith's career in music took a complete turn in 2007. Their native Ozarks are still very much their home, but they have become a Midwest institution because of all the traveling they have done. Along the Mississippi River from the Twin Cities to New Orleans and on many trips to the West Coast (including two in 2007), they have built a name for themselves outside of their home region. Other notable destinations include Chicago, Nashville, Austin, and Colorado.
After playing at several film festivals throughout the globe, the documentary "Homemade Hillbilly Jam"—which profiles the band and their extended family's music—has won over audiences and critics alike. Big Smith is presently hard at work with the release of their sixth studio album scheduled for the spring or summer of 2008.
The first five albums, chronicling their lengthy partnership, have been critically acclaimed and continue to sell well. Not only that, but the band's self-titled debut and "Big Rock" are also highly acclaimed studio albums. Completing the catalog is a live gospel CD titled "Live at Lonestar," which honors the musical heritage of their family.
