Jessica Anne Newham (October 5, 1991) is an Australian-American singer, songwriter, and musician. She is professionally known by her stage name, Betty Who. Sydney, New South Wales, is the place of her birth. Newham is a self-taught musician; she learned to play the piano and guitar when she was 14, penned her first songs at 16, and debuted as a singer-songwriter the following year. Her stage name is taken from the title of a song she wrote when she was 16 about love that was never returned.
On November 30, 2012, pop music blogger and official Grammy blogger at the time, Arjan Writes, unveiled Newham's debut track "Somebody Loves You" under the alias Betty Who. The song, which Newham and Thomas co-wrote and produced, received instant acclaim and went viral, being included on prominent websites including Socialite Life, Pop on And On, and Popservations. On January 22, 2013, a music video by Evan Savitt was published, and on March 11, 2013, an official remix was released by famed indie pop producer FM Attack.
The Movement, Newham's first EP, came out on April 17, 2013. The EP was initially released independently as a free download, and because of its overwhelming popularity online, she was courted by numerous major labels before signing with RCA Records. On April 9, 2013, one week before its actual release date, it made its world premiere on Billboard.
