Ben Harper Information
Benjamin Chase Harper (October 28, 1969) is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter. Harper was born in Pomona, California, and began playing the guitar as a child. Harper’s major music influence was Bob Marley’s performance in Burbank, California, when he was just nine years old in 1978. His music style exhibits soul, reggae, folk, rock music, and blues. He is primarily known for his activism, vocals, live performances, and his guitar-playing skills.
Harper played his first music gig at the age of 12. While a teenager, Harper began mimicking the style of Robert Johnson during the 1980s. Harper was invited to tour with an artist of the Taj Mahal. They visited Hawaii and recorded an album for the Taj Mahal called “Follow the Drinking Gourd.” The album was released in November 1990.
Harper has also worked with Tom Freund (a folk multi-instrumentalist). Harper recorded an LP with Freund in 1992 entitled “Pleasure and Pain.” Right after the recording of this limited edition, Virgin Records signed a lifetime record deal with Harper. Harper then released his debut album under the Virgin Records titled “Welcome To The Cruel World” in 1994. In December 1993, Harper received an invitation from the Rencontres Trans Musicales in France.
Harpers received major attention in Australia and Europe during his music career. Harper has also participated in the Vote for a Change concert tour in October 2004. He released his double album “Both Sides of the Gun,” which was released in 2006, debuting number 7 on the Billboard Charts. Harper participated in a benefit album, “Songs for Tibet,” in 2008.
Harper has released twelve studio albums so far in his entire career, including Fight For Your Mind (1995), Burn to Shine (1999), White Lies for Dark Times (2009), and several others. Harper has won three Grammy Awards and has been nominated seven times in various award shows.
