Barbara Josephine Bulat (April 13, 1984) is a Canadian folk singer-songwriter known by her stage name, Basia Bulat. Her autoharp performances have made her famous. "Happy Tuesday" was Bulat and Holly Coish's radio show on CHRW-FM, the campus and community radio station at the University of Western Ontario, when they were both students there. After her friends convinced her to open for Julie Doiron, Bulat quickly garnered a loyal following. This was her maiden appearance on stage.
Rough Trade Records signed Bulat after she released an indie EP in 2005. In April 2007, Howard Bilerman produced her full-length first album, Oh, My Darling. Canadian distribution of the record came later via Hayden's Hardwood Records. Howard Bilerman co-produced her second album, Heart of My Own, released on January 26, 2010, by Rough Trade Records in the US and Secret City Records in Canada. On February 13, 2010, it reached its highest position on the Billboard charts, at number 13.
Good Advice, her fourth studio album, was released in 2016, and was produced by Jim James, the lead singer of My Morning Jacket. It was nominated for the Polaris Music Prize in 2016. She leaned on her female friends amid her recent split, and the album is named after them. On March 5, 2016, it reached a high of number 22 on the Billboard charts.
