Balsam Range Information
Balsam Range is a music group that was formed in Haywood County, North Carolina. The bluegrass and acoustic group was created in 2007 by five guys from the same county. The current lineup of the band still has its original five members. On mandolin and vocals Darren Nicholson; on upright bass, resonator guitar, and vocals, Tim Surrett; on fiddle and lead tenor, Buddy Melton; on banjo, Dr. Marc Pruett; and on guitar and vocals, Caleb Smith.
Marching Home (2007) was the first album by the Balsam Range. The collection includes guest appearances from Jim Van Cleve, Tony Rice, Joe Diffie, Doyle Lawson, and Jerry Salley. It also featured "Blue Mountain," which remains the group's most requested song to date. Last Train to Kitty Hawk followed the first album in 2009. The title song hit number one on Bluegrass Unlimited's National Bluegrass Survey in September of the same year. Trains I Missed was the title song of their third album that made the Balsam Range win the first IBMA Award, Song of the Year, in 2011.
A few of the other notable studio albums by Balsam Range are Papertown, Daylight (with John Driskell Hopkins, Live at the Altamont, Five, Mountain Voodoo, It's Christmas Time, Mountain Overture (with the Atlanta Pops Orchestra Ensemble), Aeonic, and The Gospel Collection.
Balsam Range also released several singles, including The Girl Who Invented the Wheel (2018) and Hobo Blues (2018).
