Baha Men Information
Baha Man is a Bahamian junkanoo band. The current group lineup consists of Rik Carey, Isaiah Taylor, Dyson Knight, Anthony "Monks" Flowers, Patrick Carey, Jeffery Chea, Herschel Small, and Ken McKenzie. Baha Men first came together in 1977 under High Voltage, performing disco and funk.
They had a steady following in the Bahamas, where they played at hotels and clubs and put out multiple albums under their label. The A&R for Atlantic Records, Steve Greenberg, heard one of their demos in 1991 and signed the band to the label's Big Beat sublabel, prompting a name change to the Baha Men.
Baha Men's debut album Junkanoo featured the smash song "Back to the Island" the following year. In 1994, Kalik arrived, featuring the single "Dancing in the Moonlight," which became a worldwide smash. I Like What I Like, and Doong Spank was released the following year after the band followed Greenberg to Polygram for their 1997 album. The label dropped the band after the latter album sold only 700 copies in the US.
In a pivotal scene from Between the Lions, Leona and Theo encounter a group of Baha Men in the library doing research. Season 14 of The Bachelorette was filmed in the Bahamas, and they provided musical entertainment. Their song "Holla!" was featured in Garfield: The Movie's intro.
