Awadagin Pratt Information
Awadagin Pratt (March 6, 1966) is a concert pianist. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After relocating to Normal, Illinois, Awadagin Pratt started taking piano lessons from Leslie Sompong when he was six years old and then violin lessons when he was nine. He attended the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign on a violin scholarship before transferring to the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore to study piano and violin.
Since being the first African-American to win the Naumburg International Piano Competition in 1992, Pratt has performed with practically every major orchestra in the United States, as well as at the Clinton and Obama White Houses and on Sesame Street. Soon after signing with the New York City-based artist management company IMG Artists after winning the Naumburg prize, Pratt began an intense performance schedule that included 40–50 shows and 70 the following year.
While performing with the New York Philharmonic, Pratt made his Lincoln Center debut in 1994. (Shepard 1998). Pratt continues to perform up to 30 recitals per year in the United States and overseas. He is working on adding violin recitals, both solo and with chamber ensembles, to his schedule. Pratt has conducted orchestras in the United States and Japan. Thus he is well-versed in the role of conductor.
