Avi Kaplan Information
Avi Kaplan (April 17, 1989) is an American singer and songwriter. He was born in Visalia, California. Kaplan was a huge fan of folk music and often visited the adjacent Sequoia National Park, which provided him with a wealth of musical inspiration. His initial musical influences were Simon & Garfunkel, John Denver, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and Bill Withers. Iron & Wine, Bon Iver, Ben Harper, and José González are just a few bands that have influenced later generations.
Kaplan was already a seasoned acapella performer before he joined Pentatonix, having previously mastered jazz and operatic styles. While in college, he joined the male a cappella group Fermata Nowhere. The group made history in 2009 when they took home the title of champions at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella as the very first group from a community college (ICCA). He became the first vocal bass player in history to win the "Best Rhythm Section" award at the finals. His victory changed the award's name from "Best Vocal Percussionist" to "Best Vocalist."
He started singing jazz with the group Singcopation during his junior year in college. After only one year together, the group took first place in the Monterrey Jazz Festival. Kaplan's first solo single, "Fields and Pier," was published on April 29, 2017, under the moniker Avriel & the Sequoias. On June 9, he dropped his first EP, Sage and Stone.
