Atlanta Pops Orchestra Information
Albert Coleman founded the Atlanta Pops Orchestra in 1945. In 1944, Coleman, an immigrant from France, started working for WSB Radio in Atlanta, Georgia. He felt the Atlanta Pops Orchestra needed to be formed to bring together the best musicians. The orchestra intended to perform for radio appearances, open-air events, and free shows in support of the artists, local kids, and aspiring musicians.
Due to concerts in Atlanta that were given away for free to local audiences, the Atlanta Pops gained notoriety throughout the Southeast. Albert was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame for his services to the orchestra and several young performers whose careers he helped launch and for the durability of his commitment to the arts in Georgia.
After Albert Coleman retired in 1998, the orchestra performed for mostly private engagements with guest conductors. Altieri & Associates Entertainment, Inc., a management, booking, and musical contracting firm based in Atlanta took over the organization's management in 2002 and continued to do so through 2019. From 2002 through 2010, John Head, a former principal trumpet with the Atlanta Symphony, led the Atlanta Pops as conductor and primary arranger. During this time, the orchestra performed all around the metro Atlanta area and went on a three-week tour of Taiwan. Dr. Jason D. Altieri succeeded Maestro Head after his retirement in 2010.
