Asia is an English rock ensemble founded in London in 1981. The original lineup was the most commercially successful. It included four members from different progressive rock bands that had been huge in the 1970s: John Wetton on bass and vocals (from King Crimson, Uriah Heep and U.K.), Steve Howe on guitar (from Yes), Geoff Downes on keyboards (from Yes and the Buggles), and Carl Palmer on drums (from Emmerson, Lake & Palmer).
Their 1982 first album, Asia, debuted No. 1 in many countries and is still their best-selling record. In 1982, Billboard ranked it the No. 1 album in the U.S. Its first hit, "Heat of the Moment," reached the top 40 in over a dozen nations and remained their best-known tune. It peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart and No.4 on Billboard's Hot 100 in the U.S.
After Thal left the band in 2022, guitarist and singer Marc Bonilla joined. Asia announced a 40th Anniversary Tour in 2022 with Marc Bonilla on vocals and guitar. The tour was canceled after Alan Parsons, the band's opener, canceled for surgery. With the addition of Virgil Donati, John Mitchell, and Harry Whitley to his touring lineup, Downes revealed the news in 2024.
