William Shakespeare's As You Like It is a pastoral comedy likely composed in 1599 and originally published in the Folio in 1623. Although the play's first performance is shrouded in mystery, it has been speculated that it may have taken place at Wilton House in 1603.
The plot of As You Like It centers on Rosalind and her journey to the Forest of Arden, seeking refuge from her uncle's court and, ultimately, love with her cousin Celia. They meet many interesting people in the woods. Still, the gloomy traveler Jaques is the most memorable because he delivers many of Shakespeare's most famous lines (including "All the world's a stage," "too much of a good thing," and "A fool!"). A fool! I ran into a kook in the woods.
In stark contrast to the other characters, Jaques constantly observes and disputes the difficulties of life in the country. Critical reception has been mixed throughout history, with some praising the play highly and others rating it lower than other works by Shakespeare. There have been musical theater, cinema, and radio versions of the piece.
