Aoife O'Donovan Information
Aoife O’Donovan (November 18, 1982) was born in Newton, Massachusetts. She is an Irish-American songwriter and singer, who is also known as the lead singer for the Crooked Still, a progressive bluegrass/string band. Aoife became interested in American folk music after she heard Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. She went to study contemporary improvisation at the New England Conservatory of Music, and in 2003, she graduated.
In the spring of 2001, O’Donovan and Corey DiMario met each other at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Later on, they met Gregory Liszt as well as Rushan Eggleston and formed a band named “Crooked Still.” They played in the Boston area venues and gained enough popularity there that they were invited to play at the Newport Folk Festival and Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. After attending the festivals, Crooked Still released their debut album entitled “Hop High.” The group has also toured in 23 states across the United States and several other countries. Crooked Still released their second studio album named “Shaken by a Low Sound” the same year.
In 2005, O’Donovan formed another trio named Sometymes Why. It was a contemporary/neo-traditional folk noir trio that consisted of Ruth Ungar Merenda and Kristin Andreassen. With Sometymes Why, she released three more albums, including a self-titled album in 2005, Sometimes Why (Silver Edition) (2007), and Your Heart is a Glorious Machine (2009). Donovan has also recorded a few solo albums including Blue Light EP (2010), Peachstone (2012), Fossils (June 11, 2013), In The Magic Hour (January 22, 2016), Man in Neon Coat: Live From Cambridge (Live Album) (September 9, 2016), and In the Magic Hour: Solo Sessions (EP) (November 1, 2019).
