Antonio Sanchez Information
Antonio Sánchez (November 1, 1971) is a Mexican composer and drummer. At five, he picked up drums. Although he was still a teenager when he started playing professionally, he quickly rose through the ranks. After graduating from the National Conservatory with a degree in classical piano in 1993, he attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Sánchez received a scholarship to pursue a master's degree in jazz improvisation at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston after earning a magna cum laude in jazz studies. He is the grandson of legendary Mexican actor Ignacio López Tarso.
In 1997, when Sánchez was still a student at the Conservatory, his instructor Danilo Pérez suggested him to Paquito D'Rivera for the drum chair in Dizzy Gillespie's United Nations Orchestra, which led to a tour with the group. Sánchez joined Perez's acoustic trio in 1997, and the group went on to tour extensively and release an album nominated for a Grammy, Motherland. After seeing him on tour, famed guitarist Pat Metheny persuaded Sánchez to join the Pat Metheny Group as its drummer. Bad Hombre, Sánchez's 2017 album, was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album category.
