Anjimile Information
Anjimile Chithambo is an American folk musician from Boston, Massachusetts, better known by his mononym, Anjimile. He was born in Dallas in 1993 and reared there before migrating to Boston. They began playing guitar at 11 and sang in choruses beginning in fifth grade and continuing through college. Their early musical influences were from their father's Oliver Mtukudzi CDs and early Sufjan Stevens albums, which they listened to in the vehicle. Later influences were sobering up and reconnecting with their Malawian ancestors.
Anjimile began creating songs while attending Northeastern University's music industry program, and they created the majority of their most recent album, Giver Taker, while in treatment in Florida in 2016. They entered NPR Music's Tiny Desk Concert competition in 2018, and a panel from Boston affiliate WBUR awarded them the best Massachusetts entrant.
Giver Taker, Anjimile's first full-length album, was released in 2020, becoming one of the top 50 albums in 2020. Anjimile quickly became an "artist you need to know," according to Rolling Stone Magazine. Anjimile was named Artist of the Month by "Consequence of Sound." He also has self-produced and published several albums before releasing the full-length album.
