Anika Information
Anika (February 6, 1987) is a German and British singer, musician, poet, journalist, and songwriter. She was born in Surrey, England. Before she began her singing career, she was a political writer based in Berlin and Bristol, England. When Portishead's producer Geoff Barrow was looking for a female vocalist to join his band Beak, she crossed paths with him. During her time in the studio with the band, Anika covered Yoko Ono's "Yang Yang" and recorded nine songs.
Several tracks from Anika became Top 40 hits on iTunes. In the iTunes Japan Top 100 Alternative Songs, "End of the World" peaked at number 78, while in the iTunes Spain Top 100 Alternative Songs, "Yang Yang" reached number 64. At Portishead's ATP I'll Be Your Mirror festivals, held in London's Alexandra Palace in July 2011 and Asbury Park, New Jersey's Stone Pony, in September 2011, Anika was a featured performer.
Anika later joined local musicians/producers Martin Thulin, Hugo Quezada, and Amon Melgarejo to form the Mexico City-based band Exploded View, releasing their debut album, also titled Exploded View, on Sacred Bones Records in 2016. In November 2017, they dropped a new E.P. on the same label titled "Summer Came Early," which was interpreted as a commentary on climate change.
Since her anti-DJ set on the Boiler Room in 2012 (with Obi Blanche), the journalist-turned-musician Anika has demonstrated a leaning inclination towards the underground club scene, routinely spinning at some of the world's most known venues.
