Angola Fall Rodeo Information
The Louisiana State Penitentiary hosts the longest-running prison rodeo, Angola Fall Rodeo, in the United States annually at the Angola Prison. It takes place on a single weekend in April and each Sunday in October. Thousands of people visit the prison every day. Inmates run the concession stands where you can buy food. Many inmates make the concession stand food from scratch using tried and true family recipes. Corrections officers handle the Angola Rodeo's monetary transactions.
In 1964, the concept of a rodeo began to take shape. Inmates and staff at the penitentiary first worked together on The Rodeo in 1965. Assistant Warden Cathy Fontenot has stated that in the past, inmates and staff pulled pickup trucks into a field "and would go out there and play around on horses." The institution has its breeding herd of horses and animals. Trustees employ the horses to monitor the progress of farm operations, and the cattle are raised for their meat.
After a previous audit revealed mishandling, the Angola rodeo's financial records for the previous decade were reviewed in 2017. A previous audit revealed that the rodeo had been keeping $6.2 million in earnings from 2014 and 2015 in a personal bank account rather than turning it over to the State of Louisiana. The state government had never tracked the earnings from the rodeo before this finding.
