Angelika Kirchschlager Information
Angelika Kirchschlager (November 24, 1965) is an Austrian lieder singer and mezzo-soprano opera from Salzburg. Kirchschlager started her musical training at the Mozarteum and studied piano and percussion there. She attended the Vienna Music Academy in 1984, where she studied with Walter Berry and Gerhard Kahry. The first engagements by Kirchschlager were at the Wiener Kammeroper and the Graz Opera House. In 1991, she won third place in the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition.
In 1993, her stage debut took place in Graz, where she acted as Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier). Kirchschlager became a member of the Vienna State Opera in 1993. She also made her debut there as Cherubino (The Marriage of Figaro). She was awarded the Mozartinterpretationspreis of the Mozartgemeinde Wien in 1993.
Kirchschlager sang the role of Sophie in the world premiere of opera Sophie's Choice by Nicholas Maw, which took place at the Royal Opera House in London in 2002. She also performed this at the American premiere of the revised version of the opera that took place at the Washington Opera along with the Austrian premiere at Volksoper Wien. Kirchschlager is stated to be the regular guest of the annual Lieder festival Schubertiade Schwarzenberg (Vorarlberg, Austria). Helmut Deutsch and Simon Keenlyside are two of her regular collaborators.
