American Aquarium Information
American Aquarium is an alternative country band founded in 2005 by lead vocalist/guitarist BJ Barham. The group originated from Raleigh, North Carolina, with its music being defined as rock, alternative country, and Americana. The current lineup of American Aquarium consists of BJ Barham – acoustic guitar, vocals; Rhett Huffman – organ, piano; Shane Boeker – electric guitar, vocals; Neil Jones – pedal steel guitar; Ryan Van Fleet – drums, percussion; and Alden Hedges – bass guitar, vocals. The band created its name based on the song "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" by Wilco.
American Aquarium has released seven albums in total. Their most critically acclaimed album to date is "Burn. Flicker. Die.," which was released in 2012. Burn. Flicker. Die. was nominated for "Best Album Artwork" and "Best Americana/Roots Album" in the 2013 Lone Star Music Awards. Antique Hearts was the first album by the band, which was released in 2006, followed by The Bible and the Bottle in 2008. The group toured extensively after that with around 250 shows a year. Bones was the minimalist live EP that was released in that same year, which was recorded in a friend's living room.
Some of the other notable albums by American Aquarium are Dances for the Lonely (Last Chance Records, 2009), Small Town Hymns (Last Chance Records, 2010), Wolves (Independent, 2015), Live in Raleigh (Last Chance Records, 2012), Live at Terminal West (Independent, 2016), Things Change (New West Records, 2018), and Lamentations (New West Records, 2020).
