Alfa Mist is a British songwriter, musician, and producer. Alfa, a schoolkid from East Ham, London, taught himself to make beats and eventually stumbled onto jazz thanks to the sampling techniques of hip-hop producers like Hi-tek, Madlib, and J Dilla. He dove deeper, teaching himself the piano by ear to analyze the harmonic complexities of these seminal songs, eventually developing his production approach characterized by bouncy rhythms fused with the immediacy of jazz improvisation and a pervading sense of melody.
While attending college, Alfa met musicians Kaya Thomas-Dyke, Emmavie, and Dornik Leigh, who would later become important contacts in the expanding London jazz scene of the middle of the 2010s. "London is extremely crucial to me," Alfa says. "Everyone here is hustling, and it is so ingrained that I don't even feel like I'm hustling anymore."
The music of Alfa has a palpable feeling of explosive velocity combined with an assured quiet. His debut full-length, Nocturne, was released in 2015, and it was a collaborative effort that showcased his ability to make crisp beats and his skill at adjusting production genres to fit in guest appearances by artists like Misch, Rakei, Emmavie, and Thomas-Dyke.
