Alabama Symphony Orchestra Information
An important American orchestra, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, plays classical music. Since its revival in 1997, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra has made great strides toward its goal of bringing its world-class musical performances to every area of the city and the state. Now 11 special event concerts and six subscription series make up the ASO's annual seasons. The ASO's Young People's Concerts are a popular program that brings classical music to students across the region (YPC). There are six YPCs held each academic year, attracting tens of thousands of students.
The ASO was recognized for its dedication to contemporary American music and passion for presenting the works of living composers with the John S. Edwards Award on June 29, 2011. Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Decatur, Point Clear, Montgomery (Huntingdon College), Florence, Selma, Dothan, and Enterprise have all hosted performances in addition to Birmingham's concert season. The Alabama Symphony Orchestra has a fruitful relationship with the Alabama Ballet and Opera Birmingham, performing with them frequently.
The ASO had also planned musical performances with the Birmingham Concert Chorale, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Alys Stephens Center, and Summerfest Performing Ensemble.
