Al Stewart Information
Alastair Ian Stewart is a folk-rock artist, singer-songwriter, and native Scot who became famous in the '60s and '70s during the height of the British folk movement. He created his music by fusing folk-rock with historical narratives about real people and events.
A platinum album and the 1976 song "Year of the Cat" are Stewart's most famous works. Past, Present, and Future from 1973 is considered a better example of Stewart's intimate brand of historical folk-rock, which he returned to in later albums. Year of the Cat with its 1978 platinum follow-up Time Passages were his biggest worldwide commercial successes.
Stewart is a recurring figure in folk revivalist songs. He hosted the 1960s Les Cousins folk club, played at the first Glastonbury Festival in 1970, knew Yoko Ono before she met John Lennon, and shared a London house with a teenage Paul Simon (who was working with Bruce Woodley of The Seekers).
Since his 1967 debut album, Bed-Sitter Images, Stewart has published 16 studio and three live albums. He is still very active on tour, performing all over the world. In 2009, Stewart's indie company, Wallaby Trails Recordings, published his most recent album, Uncorked.
At the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in April 2017, Stewart was honored with a Lifetime Achievement award. Tony Blackburn, with whom Stewart had previously performed in a Dorset band, was the presenter. He embarked on a UK tour in October 2022 with The Empty Pockets as his support.
