Adrian Belew Information
Robert Steven "Adrian" Belew (December 23, 1949) is an American record producer, singer, songwriter, and musician. He was born in Covington, Kentucky. An instrumentalist and vocalist best known for his distinctive, impressionistic guitar tones (which, rather than depending on normal instrumental tones, sometimes mimic sound effects or noises created by animals or machinery), has made him a household name.
As a guitarist and vocalist for the progressive rock band King Crimson from 1981 until 2009, Belew gained widespread acclaim as an "incredibly versatile player." Nearly twenty of his solo albums have been published on Island Records and Atlantic Records, with styles ranging from art rock and New Wave to Beatles-inspired pop-rock and progressive rock to experimental noise. Additionally, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Belew headed the band GaGa and was a member of the inactive pop band the Bears.
A prolific session, guest, and touring musician, Belew has shared the stage with the likes of Frank Zappa and David Bowie, the Talking Heads, Laurie Anderson, and Nine Inch Nails, and his work can be heard on the smash singles of Paul Simon, Tom Tom Club, and others. His tune "Oh Daddy" reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1989, and his song "Beat Box Guitar" was nominated for a Grammy in 2005 for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
