Academy of St Martin in the Fields Information
The Academy of St Martin in the Fields (ASMF) is a London-based English chamber orchestra. Once upon a time, in London, there was a small string ensemble called "The Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields," created by conductor Neville Marriner and John Churchill, the Master of Music at St. Martin-in-the-Fields church. On November 13, 1959, the ASMF held its inaugural concert at the chapel that would later bear its name. The hyphen was removed from the orchestra's full name in 1988.
The ASMF in the Fields received The Queen's Award for Export Achievement in 1993, making them the first and only orchestra to do so. Murray Perahia has been the orchestra's Principal Guest Conductor since 2000 and has been on commercial recordings alongside the ensemble in conducting and piano roles.
Joshua Bell became the second person in the orchestra's history to be named Music Director in May 2011. His tenure began in September 2011 and was initially contracted for three years. Following a three-year extension in July 2017, the ASMF extended Bell's contract until 2020. Being the first composer to hold this affiliation with the ASMF, Sally Beamish will remain in her role as composer-in-residence until the 2019–2020 season.
