Produced on Broadway for the first time in 1959, A Raisin in the Sun is a play written by Lorraine Hansberry and inspired by Langston Hughes's poem of the same name, "Harlem" (or "A Dream Deferred"). The story follows a black family living in south Chicago as they cope with housing discrimination, racism, and integration while trying to better their financial situation with an insurance payout after the death of their father.
It was awarded the finest play of 1959 by the New York Drama Critics' Circle, and it has been included in best-of-all-time lists by outlets like The Independent and Time Out in recent years. It took A Raisin in the Sun's producer, Philip Rose, eighteen months to raise enough money to launch the film because of its controversial all-black ensemble.
People had different opinions on whether the mother or the son should be the protagonist. Poitier's performance captivated New York audiences, which he credited to his decision to focus on the son. Hansberry's drama arrived in London's West End on August 4, 1959, around five months after it premiered on Broadway. It was performed at the Adelphi Theatre.
