SDCCU Stadium, formerly known as San Diego Stadium and Jack Murphy Stadium, is located at 9449 Friars Road, San Diego, California. It serves as a home field to the NCAA San Diego State Aztecs football team and the AAF San Diego Fleet football team. The stadium was also the home of the MLB San Diego Padres and the NFL San Diego Chargers. It opened to the general public on August 20, 1967, with a construction cost of around US$27.75 million. The venue has a seating capacity of about 70,561 people for football and 67,544 for baseball. It is owned and operated by the City of San Diego. Frank L. Hope and Associates designed the architecture of the venue.
San Diego State Aztecs played their first game at the SDCCU stadium on September 15, 1967, against Tennessee State (16-8) in front of 45,822 fans. The stadium has also hosted three Super Bowls; Super Bowl XXII (1988), Super Bowl XXXII (1998), and Super Bowl XXXVII (2003). It has also hosted the 1984 and 1998 National League World Series and Major League Baseball All-Star Games in 1978 and 1992. International soccer matches were also held at the stadium, such as the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the US Cup. Besides athletic events, the venue also hosts concerts and festivals. Popular bands such as Jay-Z, The Eagles, and One Direction have performed at the stadium.
