The Peoples Bank Theatre was originally a vaudeville house that is located in historic downtown Marietta, Ohio. The venue was previously called the Hippodrome. The venue was built in 1911, and it was first opened for the local public on May 9th, 1919. Since its inception, the theatre has hosted a wide variety of live entertainment events. The venue has a seating capacity of 657. The venue was the best destination for plays, traveling live acts, magic lantern projections, and much more during its early years. Later on, it began hosting silent moving pictures and live music.
Peoples Bank Theatre opened with a premiere showing of Daddy Long Legs, which starred Mary Pickford. It featured one of the Midwest’s largest “legitimate theatre” stages with a capacity to accommodate the biggest Broadway plays of that time. The theatre features a large chorus girl’s room, plush carpeting, seven dressing rooms, perfect sightlines, exceptional acoustics, a seating capacity of 1,200, a giant silver screen, and an orchestra pit. Currently, the theatre hosts Broadway plays, music concerts, silent films, vaudeville acts, and magical acts. The venue was handed over to Shea Theatres of New York in 1949. The new owners began renovating the theatre with an estimated cost of $50,000.
Peoples Bank Theatre’s stage was graced by some of the nation’s most famous entertainers, politicians, and celebrities. Some notable names include Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Stewart, Judy Garland, Boris Karloff, Dick Van Patten, Kitty Wells, Ernest Tubb, Minnie Pearl, Randy Travis, and Tex Ritter.
