The Peabody Auditorium is an entertainment venue that is located in Daytona Beach, Florida. The auditorium opened for the local public on October 6, 1949. It has a seating capacity of 2,521. For more than 60 years, the venue has been serving as a home to performances of the Daytona Beach Symphony Society. It was also the summer home (from 1966 until 2009) of the London Symphony Orchestra. The venue is best known for hosting various events such as headline performers, opera, touring Broadway shows, drama, and comedy performances. Some of the other presenters apart from the in-house programming include civic ballet, cheerleading, bodybuilding, schools, dance competitions, nonprofit and for-profit promoters.
The Peabody Auditorium was originally constructed in 1919. Since its opening, the auditorium has enjoyed notable appearances by many of the world’s most famous performers, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Rudolph Nureyev. In 1946, the venue was destroyed in a fire. Eventually, after considerable planning by the Daytona Beach City Commission and the civic donors, the present auditorium was built and opened. The venue was given the name in honor of Simon J. Peabody, who donated the land. He was also instrumental in building the past burnt auditorium. The exterior sculptures of four muses were completed by the artist Fred Dana Marsh.
Creating a long history of presenting international stars, the Peabody Auditorium hosted some of the entertainment industry’s biggest names. The top of the list includes Elvis Presley, Tony Bennett, James Taylor, Jerry Seinfeld, Liza Minnelli, Frank Sinatra, and David Copperfield.
