The venue is known as the third-largest stadium by capacity, in the Big 12 Conference, with a seating capacity of 61,500. The current record for single-game attendance was at maximum capacity, which was set on September 5, 2015. The architecture of the stadium was designed by Finch-Heery & DDDKG Architects.
The Jack Trice stadium was known as Cyclone Stadium until 1997. After the death incident of Jack Trice, the students made persistent requests, and eventually, the facility was renamed Jack Trice Stadium to honor the deceased one. The venue also became the only one in Division I FBS named for an African American individual.
Jack Trice Stadium enclosed their south end zone; that was an announcement made in 2014. This small change brought the total capacity to 61,500, including a lower bowl seating capacity of 7,500 and an upper bowl seating capacity of 5,800. The surface of the Jack Trice Stadium was of Astroturf from 1975 to 1995. Since 1996, the stadium has had an original grass surface.
