The venue broke ground in 1968 and officially opened for the public on September 27, 1969. The stadium underwent some major renovations in 1980, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2015, and 2016. The total construction cost of the project was $3 million. The architecture of the building was done by Cannon & Mullen. Maverik Stadium has a seating capacity of 25,100, with a surface of AstroTurf GameDay Grass 3D60 Extreme since 2012. The venue is situated on the campus of Utah State University.
Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium serves as the home field to the Utah State Aggies of the Mountain West Conference. The stadium originally opened as “Romney Stadium,” named after the SU’s all-time most successful football coach Dick Romney. Earlier in 1968, the first game in the stadium was played on September 14, where USU defeated New Mexico State 28–12. The stadium was given its current name on December 5, 2009, when the USU announced that it would be given this name in honor of Aggie Merlin Olsen, a Pro and College Football Hall of Fame member.
On October 4, 1996, the largest crowd of Utah State witnessed a 45–17 loss to BYU at Maverik Stadium. A record of 33,119 (including standing room) was recorded during the game. Also, the largest crowd to watch a high school football game occurred at the stadium, creating Utah’s history.
