Krapp in a Spanish Style. The theatre has a seating capacity of 1,681, and it is under the ownership of The Shubert Organization. The Majestic Theatre is one of the largest Broadway theatres in town. It is the main venue for major musical theatre productions. The theatre opened with the musical Rufus LeMaire's Affairs. It serves as home to many primarily large musicals in the history of 90 long years. In 1996, the theater hosted the 50th Tony Awards on the set of Phantom.
In 1987, the interior and exterior of the Majestic Theatre had designated New York City landmarks. The designation was given just before the current long-running tenant, The Phantom of the Opera. For Phantom, the stage was modified and expanded. The Phantom of the Opera made a box office record for the Majestic Theatre when the production grossed $2,146,125.94 over nine performances.
