Libbey Bowl is a community-owned amphitheater located in a beautiful oak grove in Libbey Park, Ojai. It has a seamless blend of natural surroundings and modern production amenities. Attending an event at the Libbey Bowl is a magical experience. The venue has a fixed seating capacity of 973, where every seat provides an excellent stage view. The amphitheater also featured a beautiful lawn area that accommodates 200-300 people, lounging on their soft picnic blankets.
Libbey Bowl was designed by renowned architects Austen Pierpont and Roy Wilson. The construction of the bowl was completed in 1957 with a total cost of approximately $12,000. It was finished just in time for the Ojai music festival that year. The festival featured the special west coast performance of Aaron Copland’s The Tender Land. Soon the bowl turned into an enchanting spot for live performances due to its surrounding nature. Over the years, the venue has hosted various live performances by some of the most notable artists across the globe.
Libbey Bowl was given its current name in honor of the benefactor Edward Drummond Libbey who donated the land to the citizens of Ojai. When the bowl was to celebrate its 50th anniversary, it was decided by the citizens of Ojai that the original wood structure was showing ill effects and needed to be reconstructed. The wood structure was replaced by steel and concrete. The community-based “Build The Bowl” campaign raised approximately $4 million in funding, and the renovation construction almost took a year to finish.
