The Hudson Theatre is one of the Broadway theaters located between Times Square and 6th Avenue in New York City. It was officially opened for the public in 1903, and in the following years, the venue would host corporate events, theatre and serve as a network radio and a television studio. Eventually, The Hudson Theatre was closed but soon reopened on February 11, 2017, as a Broadway theater with a seating capacity of 970. The architect of the building was designed by J.B. McElfatrick & Son along with Israels & Harder.
The Hudson Theatre is owned by Millennium & Copthorne Hotels and operated by Ambassador Theatre Group. The theater served as a CBS Radio from the 1930s through the 1940s but was purchased by NBC in 1950 and converted it for their television studio purposes. Some of the notable shows that originated at the venue include the first season of The Price Is Right, The Kate Smith Hour, and Broadway Open House.
The Hudson became home to The Tonight Show in 1954 until 1959, first with Steve Allen and then with Jack Paar. In 1956, Abraham Hirschfeld, a developer, purchased the structure of the venue. Other notable theatrical and concert events that have taken place at the theatre include The Lion and the Mouse (1907), State of the Union (1945), The Voice of the Turtle (1947), Detective Story (1949), Toys in the Attic (1960), Becket (1961), and many others.
