Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is an arena located in Storrs, Connecticut. It has a seating capacity of 10,167. The arena broke ground in the summer of 1987 and opened for the local public on January 21, 1990. The Pavilion is owned and operated by the University of Connecticut. Gampel Pavilion is said to be the largest on-campus arena in New England. The arena was named after the 1943 UConn graduate and industrialist Harry A. Gampel, a philanthropist who donated $1 million to construct the arena and walked with Martin Luther King Jr.
Harry A. Gampel Pavilion serves as the primary home to the UConn Huskies men’s basketball, women’s volleyball, and women’s basketball teams. The arena is the centerpiece of the UConn Sports Center, including Wolff-Zackin Natatorium.
On January 27, 1990, the first basketball game was played at the Gampel Pavilion, between the then 20th-ranked Huskies and the 15th-ranked St. John’s Redmen. The game was won by UConn 72–58. The Huskies men’s basketball team has an impressive 195–37 record from 1990 through 2020. There are plaques throughout the concourse of Gampel Pavilion, recognizing the Huskies of Honor. This recognition program was initiated in 2006, and it honors the most significant figures in the UConn basketball program’s history.
