Fountain Street Church is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and was once very unique in the US for being religiously liberal, large, and non-denominational in a notably conservative city. It initially arose as a Baptist church responding to the ascendency of liberal Christianity in the late 19th century. Fountain Street Church was established in the biggest town in West Michigan in 1869. It was formerly known as Fountain Street Baptist Church. Later in 1960, it surrendered its Baptist name and identity, and the church became an independent and non-denominational liberal church.
Liberal Legacy – A History of Fountain Street Church was a book published in 1959 by Philip Buchen that chronicles Fountain Street Church's story. The writer was the legal advisor to President Gerald Ford, apart from being a church member. The church's newest mantra is "Free the Mind, Grow the Soul and Change the World." This summarizes the approach of the church when it comes to religion from the earlier days to now.
The American neo-Gothic building, which housed Fountain Street Church, was burned to the ground in May 1917 with no cause ever being determined.
