On the opening day of Children's Mercy Park, Sporting played against the Chicago Fire (a scoreless draw match witnessed by around 19,925 people). During the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Canada scored the first goal of the stadium, which was given to Dwayne De Rosario as a penalty kick and he converted it beautifully into a goal against Panama.
