Peter Stone wrote the musical Titanic, which has music and lyrics by Maury Yeston. The tragedy that befell the RMS Titanic on her first voyage on April 15, 1912, inspires the film. The Richard Jones–directed musical premiered on Broadway on April 23, 1997, and lasted for 804 performances, winning five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. There is no connection to the 1997 film that shares the same title.
The 1985 discovery of the RMS Titanic's remains occurred around 12,500 feet below the Atlantic Ocean's surface, around 370 miles (600 km) south-southeast of Newfoundland's coast. Composer and lyricist Maury Yeston, who wrote the book and music for the 1982 Broadway hit Nine, was interested in this.
Anthony Warlow portrayed Captain Smith in an Australian concert staged in November 2022. The studio recorded a 2023 tour of the U.K. and made it available to watch on BroadwayHD on December 15, 2023. In this updated version, Bree Smith plays Alice, and there's a new scene when First Officer Murdoch takes his own life since he feels responsible for the tragedy.
