The Tragedy of Carmen Information
In addition to the original Prosper Mérimée novella, which served as the inspiration for Georges Bizet's opera, La Tragédie de Carmen by Peter Brooks also incorporates aspects from the opera. A young farm girl named Micala travels to the city searching for Don José, her childhood sweetheart. He receives a letter from his mother from Micala. José is intrigued when Carmen sings a love ballad during a break from work.
José and his commanding officer Zuniga are entrusted with investigating a disturbance that occurs. Zuniga tells José to take Carmen to jail because he believes she is the one who started the argument. Carmen then promises José that if she is allowed to leave, she will meet him at her friend Lillas Pastia's club. Zuniga demotes and locks up Carmen when José lets him leave.
The club's proprietor, Lillas Pastia, talks about his upbringing and the conditions of his regular patrons. Carmen shows up at the bar with stolen stuff. Zuniga appears and tries to extort Carmen and Lillas Pastia, but they manage to win him over. When José does show up, Carmen entertains him. Carmen is enraged when José is abruptly called back to work, and José agrees to her requests that he stay with her. When Zuniga returns, he and José start to fight.
