Richard O'Brien, an actor and a cast member, and Sharman wrote the screenplay. O'Brien also wrote the music, lyrics, and script for the 1973 musical stage version of The Rocky Horror Show, which the film is based on.
Bray Studios and the historic country house Oakley Court, which had formerly hosted Hammer Film Productions, were where the film was shot in the UK. Many set elements and props were taken straight from Hammer horror flicks. Sue Blane, the film's costume designer, didn't do any study for her designs, even though the picture is a spoof and tribute to several kitsch science fiction and horror films.
It has the record for the longest-running theatrical run ever, with restricted screenings continuing into 2024, nearly half a century after its premiere. There is a long-standing history of audience participation in many cities' live amateur shadow-casts who perform the film live on screen. Near Halloween, the movie is aired frequently.
