James Wayne Stafford (January 16, 1944) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and comedian. He got prominence in the 1970s for his recordings “Wildwood Weed,” “Swamp Witch,” “My Girl Bill,” “Under the Scotsman’s Kilt,” and “Spiders & Snakes.” Since 1990, Stafford has headlined at his theatre, which is located in Branson, Missouri. He was born and raised in Winter Haven, Florida. While he was studying in High School, Swamp used to play in a band called the Legends. Stafford was self-taught on harmonica, organ, banjo, piano, fiddle, and guitar.
Swamp Witch, which was produced by Lobo, was Stafford’s first chart hit. In July 1973, the recording cracked the United States Top 40. His biggest hit of all time was “Spiders & Snakes,” which was released on March 2, 1974. It reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Also, it sold over two million copies and ended up earning a gold disc that month by the RIAA.
In 1974, Stafford appeared on the television show called “Rock Concert” that was aired in the United Kingdom. He started his show called “The Jim Stafford Show,” which was a six-week summer variety series.
The show was broadcasted on ABC from July 30, 1975, to September 3, 1975. The show featured Gallagher, Cyndi Wood, Deborah Allen, Richard Stahl, and Valerie Curtin. The Jim Stafford Show was co-produced by Tony Scotti, April Kelly, Rod Warren, and Stafford himself.
