The Count of Monte Cristo Information
The Count of Monte Cristo is a musical based on the novel of the same name by Alexandre Dumas (1844). It had influences from the 2002 film adaptation of the book. Jack Murphy wrote the book and lyrics of the musical, whereas Frank Wildhorn is the music writer. In November 2008, the musical had a workshop in New York City, starring Gregg Edelmann, Natalie Toro, James Barbour, Brandi Burkhardt, and several others from the Broadway production, A Tale of Two Cities.
The concept recording for the musical was released on December 12, 2008, after the workshop. The recording went platinum, and it starred many European theatrical superstars. On March 14, 2009, the show premiered in the Theater St. Gallen, Switzerland. Thomas Borchert was starring as The Count whereas Andreas Gergen was the director of the production and Sophie Berner played the role of Mercedes.
The first licensed international production of The Count of Monte Cristo was premiered on April 21, 2010, in Universal Arts Centre, Seoul, Korea, directed by Robert Johanson. The show was closed on June 13 of the same year. In 2011 and 2013, the production returned with minor changes in the plot and songs.
The Count of Monte Cristo’s English version (United States) was performed at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. The show ran from January 22 to 31, 2015. Pioneer Theatre Company produced the professional American premiere of the musical in Salt Lake City. It was released in May 2016 under the direction of Marcia Milgrom Dodge.
