SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical is a stage musical co-created and directed by Tina Landau. It includes songs by numerous performers and a script by Kyle Jarrow. It premiered at Chicago's Oriental Theatre in June 2016 and is based on the SpongeBob SquarePants animated TV series by Nickelodeon.
When the musical premiered, critics were impressed. At the 72nd Tony Awards 2018, it shared the title for most-nominated production with Mean Girls with twelve nominations. Schenectady, New York's Proctors Theatre, hosted the opening night of a North American tour not produced by Equity. The original Broadway ensemble members returned for a Nickelodeon television special that premiered on December 7, 2019.
The opening night of the SpongeBob Musical UK tour was April 5, 2023, at Southampton's Mayflower Theatre, and the closing night was September 9, 2023, at Newcastle's Theatre Royal. The musical was announced to have its UK premiere on October 24, 2022. It toured the country beginning on April 5, 2023, at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton and culminating with five weeks at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London.
