South Pacific is a musical that was composed by Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II gave lyrics, and Joshua Logan and Hammerstein wrote the book. It premiered in 1949 on Broadway and became an immediate hit. The musical ran for almost 1,925 performances. The plot of the musical is based on the book called “Tales of the South Pacific,” by Pulitzer Prize-winning author James A. Michener.
Rodgers and Hammerstein had a belief that if they combine Tales of the South Pacific with several other stories, they can get a better one. This is because Michener’s work was already successful, and other stories, when combined, will send a strong message on racism. The plot of the story was centered on an American nurse who was allocated on a South Pacific island during World War II. She falls in love with a middle-aged French who was related to expatriates, professionally a plantation owner. He was struggling to accept his mixed-race children.
The secondary romance of the South Pacific was between a young Tonkinese woman and a U.S. Marine lieutenant. So, the musical was based all along with the candidly racial prejudice. The original Broadway was very successful. To that point, it was the second-longest-running Broadway musical. Since then, the musical has remained popular. Rodgers and Hammerstein also wrote a few songs for the musical once they realized its long-lasting presence among the audience. The production has won ten Tony Awards. It is the only musical that has won the Tony Awards in all four acting categories.
