Shumka Information
Shumka is a Canadian based, Ukrainian dance company established in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1959. Shumka presents an intimate concert repertoire as well as the dance-theatre touring productions though millions can also see them on international television broadcasts. Shumka has given command performances for Presidents, Prime Ministers, and Queens. The company has now been around for over 60 years, and the dance company has shaped its signature dance style and music. Shumka has presented nine cross-Canada tours so far and has toured Ukraine and China. One of the biggest productions by Shumka so far was “Shumka’s Cinderella,” which premiered in 2000.
Shumka premiered “Kobzar” in 2016. Kobzar was a folk and dance. In 2018, the dance company premiered two more new works, “Elders” and “Ancestors.” They were collaborative pieces that were created with numerous local indigenous artists. In September 2019, Shumka premiered one of the successful documentaries of their projects to date entitled “Dancing on Eggshells: The Making of Ancestors & Elders” which Steve Glassman and Leslie Sereda directed. Their project “Mosquito’s Wedding (All We Need Is Love)” was inspired by the Ukrainian traditional folk song.
The company has also presented Shumka’s Nutcracker, this occurrs annually in Edmonton and other Canadian centers. It is a lush production of Tchaikovsky’s Christmas Classic. The dance company also has an educational program where they teach Ukrainian and RAD-based fitness classes, which is for adults and seniors. It includes renowned Silver Swans and Seniors Can Shumka programs.
