Shen Yun Performing Arts Information
Shen Yun Performing Arts, whose Chinese name means "divine rhythm arts troupe," is an American non-profit performing arts and entertainment company. It puts on dance shows and symphony events worldwide. Falun Gong is a new religious movement that runs the company.
Based on the Dragon Springs property in Deer Park, New York, near the residence of the group's leader, Li Hongzhi, and his supporters, Shen Yun was created in 2006. Chinese expatriate Falun Gong believers founded it. The cost of renting the space, advertising the concert, and selling tickets was covered by Falun Gong practitioners.
Pipa, suona, dizi, guzheng, and other percussion instruments from China provide the music for Shen Yun dances. A full Western orchestra guides the melodies on pages 6 and 31. You may hear solo performances of traditional Chinese instruments like the erhu between dances.
When performing, the dancers of Shen Yun don elaborate costumes and frequently use a wide array of props. Ancestral Chinese court dancers, warriors, or figures from timeless tales are shown in certain outfits, while others aim to mimic the attire of other ethnic groups.
The symphonic orchestra made seven stops in the United States in 2013. Its Washington, D.C., performances occurred at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Centre. The orchestra's 2023 inaugural performance included classical and contemporary pieces at New York's David Geffen Hall.
