San Diego Opera Information
San Diego, California's San Diego Opera Association (SDO) is a professional opera company. After forming in 1965, the San Diego Opera began performing operas under that moniker. One of the top 10 opera companies in the US, it is a member of the professional association OPERA America.
The company's original name, the San Diego Opera Guild, was established in 1950, to host touring productions of the San Francisco Opera in the San Diego region. In 1965, SDO staged its inaugural play, La bohème.
Downtown San Diego's San Diego Civic Theatre has been the company's home since its inception. From January through April, it staged four operas, down from five in the previous season due to the economic downturn 2008.
After the opera board indicated in March 2014, that the 2014 season would be the final, the company's board of directors reversed the decision. 2015 a reduced version of the already scheduled season was announced, with three titles instead of four. Company officials announced David Bennett's appointment as San Diego Opera General Director in March 2015. Bennett had previously served as executive director of the Gotham Chamber Opera. He began on June 15, 2015.
With a budget reduction from $18 million in 2014 to $10 million in 2018, Bennet developed a new program consisting of three annual classic opera productions, a "Detour series" of smaller, more experimental works, and stepped-up community outreach initiatives.
