Richard Dawkins (March 26, 1941) is a British evolutionary biologist and author. He was born in Nairobi, British Kenya. He served as Oxford's Professor for Public Understanding of Science from 1995 - 2008 and is now an emeritus associate at New College. His book The Selfish Gene, published in 1976, popularized the gene-centered perspective of evolution. Several scholarly and literary honors have been bestowed upon Dawkins.
Differential survival of replicating entities is how life develops, according to Dawkins' The Selfish Gene. In his seminal book The Extended Phenotype (1982), he introduced the idea that a gene's impacts on phenotype can extend far beyond the body of an organism, as in the case of a beaver constructing a dam. Meme was first coined in this novel, along with The Selfish Gene.
Dawkins has made a name for himself as an outspoken atheist and opponent of creationism and intelligent design. Using the analogy of a watchmaker to argue for a supernatural creator based on the complexity of living organisms, Dawkins published The Blind Watchmaker in 1986. The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science was established in 2006 under his leadership. An Appetite for Wonder (2013) and A Brief Candle in the Dark (2015) are two books of Dawkins' autobiography.
