Rent the Musical Information
Rent is a musical written by Jonathan Larson, who composed the music and lyrics. La Boheme, an opera written by Giacomo Puccini in 1986, serves as a vague inspiration for the musical. The first performance of Rent took place at the New York Theatre Workshop in 1993. Jonathan Larson, the creator of the show, passed away unexpectedly in 1996 due to an aortic dissection.
It is believed that his death was caused by undiagnosed Marfan syndrome. His death occurred the night before the formal premiere. In April 1996, the show relocated to the bigger Nederlander Theatre on Broadway. The musical received several accolades, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Musical Production.
The performance depicts the narrative of a group of young artists who are battling to live in the East Village of Lower Manhattan while living in poverty and being affected by HIV/AIDS. An adaptation of the narrative was made into a movie in the year 2005.
